Last month, Alondra Nelson, Harold F. Linder Professor in the School of Social Science, traveled with the AI Policy and Governance Working Group to Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design, for a convening on the risks, benefits, and implications of open AI models. The meeting concluded with an expert panel discussion on “AI in the Open: Responsible Innovation for Access, Accountability, and Discovery,” moderated by Nelson.

As access to powerful artificial intelligence tools unlocks potential for innovation, reshaping fields from science and medicine to business and the arts, it is essential to carefully consider the implications of its widening use for societal well-being.

The panelists included Lance Askildson, Ph.D., Provost of the Chaminade University of Honolulu; Deep Ganguli, research scientist at Anthropic; Marietje Schaake, international policy director at Stanford University’s Cyber Policy Center; Helen Toner, Director of Strategy at the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology; and Gabriel Yanagihara, teacher at the Iolani School.
