Matakamaka

[Puppetry] is the space for people to stop, and think, and feel

Maria Tri Sulistyani, Papermoon Puppet Theater, 2019 Residency

Based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Papermoon Puppet Theater is celebrated around the world for its innovative, socially conscious forms of puppetry and storytelling. “Matakamaka” was an original production inspired by Shangri La, cross-cultural connections between Indonesia and Hawaiʻi, and environmental stewardship through the practice of Aloha ʻĀina and Kapu Aloha.

Depicted with life-like puppets and set materials sourced from found and recycled objects, this immersive theater experience guided guests through silent narratives and human-to-human connections through expression and movement.

Papermoon Puppet Theater collaborated with Hawaiʻi-based artists Maseeh Ganjali, Nawa Lanzilotti, Monika Haar and Paul Agung for this production.
