During the Egyptian Arab Spring in 2011, former Shangri La Artist-in-Residence, Bahia Shehab, realized that her research on the Arabic script for the word, “no,” had a higher purpose. Channeling the Arabic phrase, “No and a thousand times no”, she created and spray-painted several artworks declaring “No” on the streets of Cairo to serve as calls for change and justice.

In 2020, a special exhibition of four No artworks by Shehab were projected on the makai (seaward-side) walls of Shangri La No to Fascism; No to Hatred; No to Racism; No to War. Today, we are sharing details of this exhibition from 2020.
